Demonstration of folding

06 May 2009

The students used modelling clay to represent how folding occurs.

The modelling clay represents rock layers and the 2 rocks represent the continents.

Gifted demo 1

The layers are formed over a long period.

Gifted demo 2

More layers form on top with the bottom layers being the oldest.

Gifted demo 3

As the continents move closer to the bedding the layers begin to fold.

Gifted demo 4

This is what happened at Hallett Cove.

Gifted demo 5

Gifted demo 6

Gifted demo 7

This could take millions of years.
