Science background. Internet sources can provide definitions of resources and classify this topic in various ways. The terms renewable and non-renewable are introduced too much older learners.
Learning sequence.
Engage: Students sit in a circle (or similar) to enable a clear view of display. Students are asked to see if they can sort and group these products in different ways. The titles are used for the final sorting attempt.
Explore: Students identify (write name) and draw some resources following our class discussion. Students are encouraged to return to display if required.
Explain: Write how three of these resources are used. This may be an extension of the initial discussion or returning to the display.
Elaborate: What would happen if our resources changed? A short discussion prior to students’ completing an illustration or short sentence. Open-ended questions provide opportunities for students to share deeper thinking.
Evaluate: Class discussion and sharing of either Explain or Elaborate recordings.
Diagnostic assessment in this initial session will provide guidance to whether the broad concept of “resources” will require revisiting.
