This series of lessons were provided as part of a Non Instructional program (NIT) where classes visited a science specialist area for one 45minute lesson per week.
As classroom teachers were utilising the Primary Connections program and their unit Up, down and all around centres on space science, the following unit is devised around natural and made features.
As this school is set in a metropolitan suburb, I took the liberty of extending the concept of “local environment” to include nearby hills, valleys, farmland and watercourses. Coastal environments were not included.
Ongoing formative assessment was used for end of year reporting to parents in relation to the Achievement standard.

… describe objects and events that they encounter in their everyday lives ….. describe changes to things in their local environment ….
Lessons and sequencing
Where particular lessons are linked into a learning sequence or are placed t a specific section of the unit this is indicated. Other lessons can be considered more “stand alone” within the whole unit.
Additional comment of resources.
If there are opportunities to look at beyond your immediate local environment, there are many Big Books that provide clear images and suitable text for younger students. Within my school Resource Centre two books with content that strongly supported the Year 1 Earth and space curriculum were –
