Science background:
Many Australian habitats are exposed to “wild” fires. Although some plant species do not recover from fire, other species regenerate from their main braches and trunk. The seeds of other species require fire for their hard outer seed cover to be split.
Traditionally, Aboriginal nations have utilized fire to manage vegetation regeneration and animal populations.
Learning sequence:
- Engage: A discussion about fires they have experienced or know about through media– wooden BBQs, an open fireplace etc.
- Explore: Images of bushfires are available on-line.
- Explain: Reinforce the stages to support creating the Storyboard.
- Elaborate: Student’s complete the four-stage storyboard.
- Evaluate: Formative assessment on student participation and learning sheet.
