Upper Sturt Primary School

Upper Sturt is a school of approximately forty students, set amongst natural bushland in the Adelaide Hills, on the edge of Belair Recreational Park. Our hectare of remnant bushland was Heritage Listed in 1999, being one of only two schools in Australia to achieve this. Our strong environmental focus encompasses many activities and all learning areas and especially takes advantage of the availability of this unique setting and resource. We are an AuSSI-SA school and students are playing an increasing part in the School Environment Management Plan.

Our students are actively encouraged to participate in all aspects of school life as a valuable part of their learning. Developing positive role models and student voice are a natural part of our small school ethos with many opportunities for students to develop skills and understanding in these areas. The many whole school activities serve to foster caring and empathy and result in a genuine culture of support.

Small student numbers mean that learning across the curriculum is able to cater for student’s individual ability but it also means that excursions are often prohibitively expensive. Involvement with the Geoscience Pathways Project has enabled the students to be involved in 2 wonderful excursions and gain a much deeper understanding of the topic. Science in the Australian Curriculum has been used in planning and assessing the unit from the Earth and Space Sciences. ‘Our Place in Space’ was conducted with the Year 3 – Year 7 group using inquiry methodologies and the 3 strands; Science as an Understanding, Science Inquiry Skills and Science as a Human Endeavour.
