Charcoal pieces placed into plastic bowl Jug of tap water per table Plastic cup Pop sticks Weights (A series of increasing weights could be used. In many schools they are stored with other mathematics resources.) Newspaper |
Science background.Learning sequence. Please note that this lesson does not include a science investigation rather explores the properties of charcoal into the Elaborate phase.
Engage: Class discussion relating to charcoal.
Explore: Initial handing of charcoal and identification and recording of some features.
Explain: When wood is burnt …. And drawing pictures
Elaborate: Continue exploring with water and weights.
SAFETY CONSIDERATION: students to be reminded of the need to handle weights with care and to keep fingers to the weight’s sides!
Evaluate: Class discussion. Formative assessment of participation, recording and safe behaviour.
