*This lesson was based on the content within two Big Books. These provided the text and photographs that enabled students to reflect on the concepts of flood, winds and drought. Other weather related concepts could be selected. |
Science background:
Extreme weather events are regularly included within newspapers or on-line news sources. A specific local event could be the foregrounding to a series of lessons.
Learning sequence:
- Engage: Show texts and discuss covers and what they may be about. Highlight features such as a glossary or index.
- Explore: Read the non-fiction titles.
- Explain: Refer to local weather conditions and any recent events in greater detail.
- Elaborate: Students have access to texts to confirm ideas. Drawings completed.
- Evaluate: Discussion on elements included within certain or all sections.
