General classroom items |
Recording equipment Recording books |
Additional items |
Selection of rocks both angular and rounded Sugar cubes Specimen jars (As jars will be heavily scratched during shaking this is a learning task where older jars can be used.) OR other small jars |
Science background:
The corners and edges of rocks and other items become smoother as they are tumbled through water action (both sea or rivers).
Learning sequence:
- Engage: Show a selection of rocks that have different levels of weathering on their edges and sides. As rocks weather they become smoother and rounder.
- Explore: Students compare two rocks and discuss a range of features – colour, size, weight (mass) roundness and smoothness.
- Explain: Our sugar cube will be like a rock and as we can’t place it into water it can be tumbled in a container.
- Elaborate: Students record the shape of their sugar cube before they start to shake. Shaking the containers outside is advised as this creates an ongoing medium noise level. After about three to five minutes students stop and examine their sugar cubes corners and edges. Shaking continues for another three to five minutes.
- Evaluate: Formative assessment through participation and to a lesser degree their recordings.
